How to Turn a Photo Into a Custom Shirt That Prints Sharp

How to Turn a Photo Into a Custom Shirt That Prints Sharp

A favorite photo can make a great shirt, or a blurry, washed-out one. The difference is almost never the printer. It comes down to the picture you start with and four or five choices you make in the editor. This guide walks through each one, with examples, so your first order looks right.

The short version
  • Upload the original photo, not a screenshot or a photo sent by text.
  • Pick a sharp, well-lit photo where the subject fills the frame.
  • Tap Remove background for pets, people and logos.
  • Choose a shirt color that contrasts with the picture.
  • Check the dashed print box and the review step before you pay.

1. Start with the biggest version of the photo

Messaging apps, Facebook and Instagram shrink photos to save data, and screenshots are smaller still. A picture that looks fine on a phone screen can turn soft once it is printed 10 to 12 inches wide.

  • On iPhone: share from the Photos app and choose the original, or AirDrop it to yourself.
  • On Android: upload straight from Google Photos or your gallery, not from a chat app.
  • Old printed photos: scan them at 600 dpi, or photograph them flat in daylight with no glare.

As a rule of thumb, aim for at least 2000 pixels on the long side for a full chest print and 1000 pixels for a small left-chest print. Most phone photos from the last few years are 3000 to 4000 pixels, so the original is almost always big enough.

Tip: our editor warns you if a picture is too small for the size you chose. If you see the warning, make the print smaller or try a larger copy of the photo.

2. Choose a photo that will read well on fabric

Fabric is softer than a screen, so contrast and detail matter more. The best photos for shirts have:

  • Good light. Daylight from a window beats flash, which flattens faces and adds red eyes.
  • One clear subject that fills most of the frame. Tiny faces in a big scene get lost.
  • Sharp focus. If it looks a little soft on your phone, it will look softer on a shirt.
  • Simple backgrounds, or ones you can remove in the next step.

3. Remove the background when the subject should stand out

A rectangular photo can look like a sticker on a shirt. Cutting out the subject makes it look designed. In our editor, tap Remove background after you upload; it works on pets, portraits, products and most logos, and you can switch back to the original if you prefer it.

Full photo kept: great for canvas and blankets.

Keep the full photo when the scene is part of the memory, such as a beach, a wedding or a family group, and on products where the picture fills the whole surface, like a canvas or blanket.

4. Pick a shirt color that contrasts with the picture

Your picture Shirt colors that work Avoid
Dark photo or black dog White, heather grey, light blue, natural Black, navy, dark heather
Bright, colorful photo White, black, heather grey Busy or very bright colors
Light photo or white pet Black, navy, forest, maroon White, cream, light grey
Logo with transparent background Any color that contrasts with the logo Colors close to the logo color

5. Get the size and placement right

The dashed box in the editor is the printer's real print area. Keep faces and text inside it and a little away from the edges. For most adult shirts:

  • Full front: about 10 to 12 inches wide. Best for photos and big graphics.
  • Left chest: about 3 to 4 inches wide. Best for logos and small marks.
  • Back: up to about 12 inches wide. Great for team names and event designs.

Not sure about fit? Every shirt page has a Size chart link next to the sizes with the supplier's real measurements.

6. Check the review step before you pay

Before checkout we show your design exactly as it will print and ask you to confirm. Zoom in on faces and text. If anything is cut off, blurry or the wrong color, go back and fix it. It takes a minute and saves a reprint.

Frequently asked questions

Can I print a photo from my phone?

Yes. Upload the original photo from your camera roll. Most phone photos are more than large enough for a full chest print.

Will the colors match my screen exactly?

Prints are very close, but fabric absorbs ink, so colors can look slightly softer than on a bright screen, especially on dark shirts.

How long does the print last?

Our prints are made to be washed and worn. Wash inside out in cold water and tumble dry low to keep them looking their best.

Is there a minimum order?

No. You can order just one, and prices drop automatically from 2 of the same style.

Ready to make yours?

Upload a photo and see it on the shirt in seconds. Order just one, made to order in the USA.
